Kylian Mbappe, a star player for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), was thrilled to become the club’s all-time leading scorer on Saturday. The Frenchman scored in PSG’s 4-2 win over Nantes in Ligue 1 to taking him past Edinson Cavani with 201 objectives for the Parisians, more than any player throughout the entire existence of the club.
A gold trophy bearing the number 201 was presented to Mbappe later in recognition of the achievement. With a brace against Marseille last weekend, Mbappe equaled his previous teammate Cavani’s 200-goal total and eagerly sought to break his record against Nantes.
But it wasn’t easy, as the Frenchman missed one shot, had another blocked, and had a penalty chalked off after a long VAR review. Mbappe’s persistence paid off in the game’s final minute of injury time (90+2′) when he latched onto a cross from Nuno Mendes and put the ball in the back of the net.
Even though he is only 24 years old, the Frenchman has scored 201 goals in just 247 games—a remarkable record. In addition, Mbappe has only been with PSG since 2017, when PSG paid a staggering €180 million to acquire him from AS Monaco.
Since then, the forward has scored goals all over the place. From 164 appearances, he has scored 137 goals in Ligue 1 and won four domestic Golden Boots in a row from 2018 to 2022. Mbappe is on track to win the French league’s top scorer award for the fifth time in a row with another 18 goals this season.
PSG prepare for an important trip to Munich:
After a rousing 4-2 victory over Nantes, PSG travels to Munich on Wednesday to face Bayern Munich in the Champions League’s second leg of their Round of 16 matchups. Kingsley Coman’s goal in the first leg gave Bayern a 1-0 lead over the other team. It’s important to remember that Paris Saint-Germain didn’t start Kylian Mbappe in the first leg because of an injury.
After being substituted, the 24-year-old gave the team a huge boost, but they were unable to win. This time around, the forward will undoubtedly attempt to turn the tide. For the second year in a row, the Parisians will try to stay out of the Champions League last-16. On Thursday, March 9, PSG will travel to the capital of Bavaria to take on Bayern.
