After their game against Bayern Munich on Tuesday, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola had a touching conversation with his former player Leroy Sane, which made fans feel nostalgic. In the second leg of their quarterfinal matchup with the Bavarians, the Sky Blues drew 1-1 at the Allianz Arena, but they won 4-1 overall to advance to the last four.
After full-time, Guardiola was pictured comforting Sane, his former City player who left for Bayern in 2020, who appeared to be in tears. After seeing this, fans got emotional, and one user asked Sane to “come home” once more. Another person inquired about the possibility of seeing the German international “play under Pep just one more time.”
He’s had a rough few days lately. Following their 3-0 loss at the Etihad last week, teammate Sadio Mane punched Sane in the face during a heated altercation in the locker room. The previous evening, he was likewise at fault for passing up on a pivotal chance for the Bavarians, cutting his work only wide of the post subsequent to going one-on-one with City goalkeeper Ederson.
It was evident that Guardiola had a lot of compassion for his former player. Rational played multiple times under his tutelage at City, scoring 39 objectives and lifting seven titles, including two Chief Association prizes.
Again, Bayern Munich is eliminated from the last eight.
In each of the subsequent three seasons, Bayern Munich has not advanced beyond the quarterfinals, despite winning the Champions League in 2020.
It was Manchester City’s turn to end their run in the last eight after losing to PSG and Villarreal in 2021 and 2022, respectively.
The Bavarians fell short at the Etihad, losing 3-0, and even though they performed better at home, they were only able to draw 1-1.
A few botched opportunities combined with protective repulsions from Dayot Upamecano at last expense them the tie as Thomas Tuchel is attempting to get the best out of them. It appeared as though the German could lead the team to great heights this season after starting his tenure with a 4-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund. However, it has since deteriorated, with Bayern also being eliminated from the DFB Pokal.
It was a disappointing end to their 2022-23 campaign, even if they won the Bundesliga.
