After Arshdeep Singh’s online harassment, Tendulkar appealed to cricket fans to keep the sport devoid of all forms of personal attacks. Sachin Tendulkar, a legendary batsman, backed Arshdeep Singh on Tuesday. He asked fans to keep cricket “free from personal attacks.” This happened after the young pacer got a lot of hateful comments online after India lost the Asia Cup match to Pakistan by five wickets.
Criticism and Support
The 23-year-old left-arm pacer was harshly criticized and trolled on social media for dropping a catch in Sunday’s Asia Cup Super 4 match against Pakistan in Dubai. “Every athlete representing the country gives their best and plays for the nation always. They need our constant support & remember, that in sports you win some & you lose some. Let’s keep cricket or any other sport free from personal attacks. @arshdeepsinghh keep working hard, and give the best reply by performing on the field. I am keenly following you. My best wishes.” Tendulkar tweeted. In the 18th over, spin bowler Ravi Bishnoi had a chance if Arshdeep caught the ball at short third man, but he didn’t. This gave Pakistan batter Asif Ali a second chance during a harrowing chase.
Online hatred and attack
The pacer quickly calmed down, though, and caught Ali in front of the wicket with a perfect yorker in the last over, after his senior pacer teammate Bhuvneshwar Kumar had given up 19 runs in the previous over. But the anger was so bad that some fans hacked into Wikipedia and changed Arshdeep’s page, adding the offensive word “Khalistani” next to his name.
The hackers changed Arshdeep’s name to Major Arshdeep Singh Langra. Later They even changed it to Major Arshdeep Singh Bajwa. Soon, authorities took steps to fix the problem. Eventually, the page was put back the way it was. Virat Kohli, Harbhajan Singh, and Irfan Pathan are just a few of the cricketers who have backed the young seamer. “Anyone can make a mistake when they are under stress. It’s a big match and the situation was tight,” Kohli had said during a post-match press conference recently. “I remember when I first played in the Champions Trophy. Against Pakistan, I remember I hit a very bad shot off Shahid Afridi. Till 5 am next morning, I was only staring at the ceiling, unable to sleep. I thought I’ll never get a game again, my career is over. So it’s natural to feel like this.”
