Correctly predicted Abdullah Shafique‘s wicket on Day 4 of the Boxing Day Test on Friday, December 29 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
Australia defeated Pakistan by 79 runs to win the second Test and the series 2-0. Pakistan set a goal of 317 and knocked out the visitors in 67.2 overs for 237.
On Day 4, the Aussies started their second innings at 187/6 and eventually posted 262 with Alex Carey contributing an important 53 off 101 balls.
At the outset of Pakistan’s second innings, Australia’s bowlers kept things tight. They bowled three consecutive maidens (overs two through four).
At the start of the fifth over, Gilchrist, who was on air, anticipated that a wicket would fall owing to the pressure created by three straight maiden overs.
Shafique (4) was out on the first ball of the fifth over, nicking a pitched-up delivery from left-arm bowler Mitchell Starc, which was nipping away, to Usman Khawaja in the slip cordon.
The dismissal put a stop to the Pakistani cricketer’s terrible performance. Despite scoring a courageous 62 off 109 balls in the first innings, he was abysmal on the field.
Pat Cummins, Australia’s skipper, scythes through Pakistan’s batting
Australian skipper Pat Cummins resumed his dominance with the ball on Day 4 of the Boxing Day Test at the MCG, taking his second five-wicket haul of the match.
After Starc dismissed Shafique, Cummins lbw the other opener, Imam-ul-Haq, for 12.
The right-arm bowler also put an end to Pakistan skipper Shan Masood’s fight, dismissing him for 60 off 71 balls. He got an edge off the left-hander, but it was swallowed up in the slips.
Cummins next bowled a short ball to remove Mohammad Rizwan (35) for 35. The third umpire determined that the ball struck the batter’s wristband, but the Pakistan keeper-batter was not satisfied.
Cummins went on to take the wickets of Aamer Jamal and Shaheen Afridi, completing a well-deserved 10-wicket haul in the Test match.
Starc also contributed 4/55, including the final wicket of Mir Hamza, as Australia earned a hard-fought victory at the MCG.
