Ishan Kishan’s strong showing in the recently finished ODI series against the West Indies may not be enough to guarantee him a spot at the top of the order for India at the 2023 World Cup, according to Chopra.
The Men in Blue defeated the Windies by 200 runs in the last One Day International on Tuesday (August 1), winning the three-match series 2-1 thanks in large part to Kishan’s blistering 64-ball 77. The series’ Player of the Series was duly selected thanks to the wicketkeeper-batter’s 184 runs, which included half-centuries in each of the three games.
Chopra endorsed the adjudicator’s choice in a video posted to his YouTube account. He clarified, however, that the team management and selectors will have to determine whether the performance was sufficient to warrant a spot as the World Cup opener:
“Ishan Kishan is, in my opinion, the Player of the Series. Ishan Kishan and Shardul Thakur might have split it, but I chose to keep Ishan Kishan since the previous two matches’ pitches were challenging. Your second wicketkeeper and third opener are prepared from a World Cup standpoint.”
Previous Indian opener player continued:
“He has scored runs, which is a positive thing. These runs are really significant because they are international runs, but if we look at it from the viewpoint of the World Cup, would they be able to assist him bat in the same position? The team must respond to that important question.”
Chopra emphasized that Kishan’s aggressive style came to the fore in the last ODI. He said that although the left-handed opener had a small amount of luck, fate always favors the bold.
Ishan Kishan may not start at the 2023 World Cup, according to Aakash Chopra
Ishan Kishan might not get to bat at the top of the order at the World Cup, according to Chopra, who notes:
“He (Kishan) might not play the opening position when he competes in the World Cup, in my opinion. Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma seem to be the only ones who can close. At No. 3, Virat Kohli will bat. As a result, none of the top three pitchers will be left-handed. They will all have the right hand.”
In order to make room for Kishan as the opener. The former cricketer-turned-commentator did not want Rohit Sharma to bat in the middle order. He stated:
“He might have to bat in the middle order for India, but who knows — Rohit might bat lower down the order,” someone said. Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli should be ranked 1, 2, and 3, respectively, therefore it won’t happen and shouldn’t happen either.”
If KL Rahul is healthy and available. Kishan will probably act as the backup opener and wicketkeeper for the World Cup. If the Karnataka wicketkeeper-batter is unavailable for the international match. The Indian think tank may have to bat one of Kishan, Rohit, and Shubman Gill down the order.
