Aakash Chopra condemns excessive seam-friendly and spin-friendly pitches in recent times. On Thursday, January 4, India defeated South Africa by seven wickets in the second Test at Cape Town. The 642 balls hit in the game were the fewest ever in a Test match that resulted in a result.
Aakash Chopra condemns excessive seam-friendly and spin-friendly pitches
Chopra agreed with Rohit Sharma in a video posted to his YouTube account that pitches throughout the world should be rated using the same criteria. However, he believes that extreme bowler-friendly surfaces should be considered terrible. He said
The key point is what is correct and what is incorrect. Rohit stated that no one should remark about the pitch and that the match officials should pay close attention since if the World Cup final pitch was awful, what kind of pitch was this? He is correct.”
“I’m wondering if this pitch is correct. Are the one-and-a-half to two-day match turners properly prepared in India? We’re attempting to excuse one extreme by using another. The fact is that none of these statements is correct. A terrible pitch, whether ours or someone else’s, should be labeled as such.
Chopra claimed that if a five-day Test lasts barely one and a half days, one should not be satisfied. He also stated that pitches should be improved and that contests should be skill-based rather than luck-based.
According to Aakash Chopra, such ideas aren’t even considered tough. He also said:
“Let’s be honest: you can’t justify these pitches in any way, whether they’re in Cape Town, Wanderers, Perth, Ahmedabad, Indore, or Delhi.” These are neither difficult nor difficult wickets; these are luck-based surfaces.”
Chopra emphasized that, in any event, there isn’t much excitement left in Test cricket, with South Africa sending a second-string squad to New Zealand and Pakistan resting Shaheen Shah Afridi in the last Test against Australia. He believes that if the matches are not played on decent surfaces, interest would decline even further.
