A new five-year agreement gives New Zealand’s female players match-fee equality
A new five-year agreement gives New Zealand’s female players match-fee equality. Under a new five-year agreement reached by NZC, the six major associations, and the New Zealand Cricket Players Association, female cricketers in New Zealand will get the same match fees as the men, representing a significant increase in compensation both domestically and internationally.

The men’s and women’s professional games are now unified under a single master agreement for the first time. The match fees for all international matches played by both men and women are NZ$4000 for ODIs and NZ$2500 for T20Is. At the national level, the Ford Trophy/Hallyburton Johnstone Shield is worth $800, and the Super Smash is worth $575. The Plunket Shield costs NZ$1750 and a Test match costs NZ$10,250 in the men’s game. According to the contracts given out, the highest-ranked New Zealand women’s player will be eligible to make up to NZ$163,246 a year (an increase from $83,432), the ninth-ranked NZ$148,946 ($66,266), and the 17th-ranked NZ$142,346 ($62,833).
Each major association’s top-ranked female domestic player will be eligible for a maximum payout of $19,146 (up from $3,423), followed by the sixth- and twelfth-placed players at $18,646 ($3,423) and $18,146 ($3,423). Moreover, a North vs. South series has been introduced, and there are now 72 instead of 54 women who have domestic contracts.
The women’s national and international players being included in the same deal, alongside the men, is fantastic, according to New Zealand’s captain Sophie Devine. Young ladies and girls will be attracted in droves by this significant advancement.
In the men’s game, where retainers are still much higher, the top-ranked foreign player will be eligible for a maximum of NZ$523,396 (up from $459,574), followed by NZ$444,196 ($377,981) for the tenth-ranked player and NZ$367,196 ($305,453) for the 20th-ranked player. Players will make between NZ$75,207 and NZ$102,707 at home. Increased financing for NZCPA’s support services and equity in areas like travel and lodging are also included in the agreement, which takes effect on August 1.
The Major Associations and the players both deserve praise for their contributions to securing such a substantial deal, said David White, chief executive of the NZC. ‘This is the most significant deal in our sport because it creates a strong bond between NZC, the Major Associations, and our players and lays the groundwork for funding, developing, and expanding cricket. The negotiation was cooperative yet quite strong. Importantly, it marks a significant advancement as we increase our investment in women’s cricket.’
