Class 7A
1. Buford (14-1)
2017 AJC Super 11 Running Back With Justice Haynes at the helm of four preseason all-state Wolves, Buford looks to win its first championship at the highest level of competition and its fourth consecutive state championship.
Although Ashton Daniels, Buford’s former quarterback, graduated from Stanford, his replacement, Dylan Wittke, has already committed to Virginia Tech and has accumulated 1,725 throwing yards in 13 career starts. The first game is Friday at Thompson, Alabama, against the local squad.
2. Grayson (10-4)
With a much younger roster, the Rams won the 2020 championship and advanced to the 2021 semifinals, where they were ultimately eliminated by Collins Hill, the eventual champion. All-State Linebacker Tennessee-bound safety Jalen Smith and Georgia Power 100 cornerback Eight defensive starters are back, including LSU’s Michael Daugherty. In the rushing department, Joseph Taylor is a returning 1,000-yard runner. Saturday’s opener versus Marietta (at Mercedes-Benz Stadium)
3. Colquitt County (8-3)
Junior quarterback Neko Fann (2,014 yards passing in 2021), wide receiver Ny Carr (856 receiving yards, committed to Georgia), tight end Landen Thomas (516 receiving yards, committed to Georgia), and running back Charlie Pace form one of the state’s best offensive quartets for the Packers and their new coach Sean Calhoun (1,138 rushing yards, committed to Georgia State). Saturday’s season opener is against Deerfield Beach, FL (at Lowndes)
4. North Cobb (10-2)
The AJC’s Super 11 Quarterback Malachi Singleton is a top contender for player of the year after accumulating 2,348 passing yards, 1,037 running yards, and 49 total touchdowns. He has decided to attend the University of Arkansas. Other notable players include Georgia Power 100 offensive lineman Robert Grigsby (North Carolina commit), running back Ben Hall (Michigan), and defensive back Quintin Ajiero (Florida commit) (Duke). Kickoff is set for this Friday at Westlake.
5. Mill Creek (11-2)
In addition to the seven returning defensive starters for the Hawks, Alabama-committed safety Caleb Downs is the top prospect in the state. And leading receiver Brendan Jenkins and starting quarterback Hayden Clark also return (525 yards receiving). Opening game is on Saturday against Walton (at Mercedes-Benz Stadium)
6. Collins Hill (15-1)
Most of last year’s starters for the state champions’ football team have graduated. Among them is all-state quarterback Sam Horn and class MVP Travis Hunter. All-state players like LB Dion Crawford and TE Ethan Davis are back for them. Our season kicks out on Saturday against Life Christian of Virginia.
7. Brookwood (10-3)
Dylan Lonergan, a senior QB prospect for the Broncos, has already committed to Alabama. LB McCain has made a public commitment to the University of Miami (Ohio). Saturday’s opener versus Norcross (at Mercedes-Benz Stadium)
8. Lowndes (10-3)
Despite losing four-year starting quarterback Jacurri Brown to Miami, the Vikings have won 10 or more games in six of the past eight seasons, and four of the five leading tacklers are returning this year. Thomasville native Zach Grage has taken over as head coach. First game is this Saturday against American Heritage of Florida.
9. Walton (9-4)
In the 2021 playoffs, the Raiders advanced to the semi-finals after defeating two regional champions before ultimately falling to Milton. Since starting quarterback Zak Rozsman has transferred to Georgia Southern, the role has fallen to junior Jeremy Hecklinski.
