7 US Open 2022 Players With Parents Who Were Tennis Pros
7 US Open 2022 Players With Parents Who Were Tennis Pros: The US Open kicked off this past Monday, with players in the top half of the singles draw. It’s been a big year for the new US Open in other ways as well. Vladimir Putin was on hand to attend since it was the first in 24 years and also because Federer is not playing. Novak Djokovic can’t enter either because of his COVID-19 vaccine status and Serena Williams retiring at the tournament is also going to be a big change.
Meanwhile, at Flushing Meadows, we have a few players of the last generation in action. On that note, let’s take a look at seven of them in no particular order:
7) Sebastian Korda
Korda, son of the 1998 Australian tennis champion Petr Korda opened his US Open campaign with a four-set win over Argentina Facundo Bagnis.
Despite losing the first two playoff rounds at Wimbledon, Korda managed to pull off a major upset win in the third round. Paul will be the next opponent for Korda in order to continue the exciting run. The 22-year-old reached the third round of Roland Garros and Australian Open this year.
6) Brandon Holt
Brandon Holt, the son of two-time US Open winner (1979 and 1981) Tracy Austin, played on the most famous tennis court in New York City.
After being down a set, Holt shocked World No. 2 Taylor Fritz in four sets. By winning the second set in a tie break, he leveled the match before dropping only seven more games to win the biggest victory of his career.
After winning the boys’ singles at Flushing Meadows, Holt shared a warm embrace with his mother on the sidelines.
5) Ben Shelton
Ben Shelton, the son of former ATP player Bryan Shelton, made his Grand Slam debut at the US Open on Monday. At age 19, Ben had a wildcard seeding and gave an almighty fright to Nuno Borges in the first round. The left-hander saved a match point with a tenth tiebreak game and forced a decider but lost in the fourth set tiebreak 12/6.
Borges is the sixth Portuguese player in Open Era history to win a Grand Slam main draw match. For his second round, Borges will be facing Wu Yibing, who defeated Nikoloz Basilashvili and became Chinese male Wimbledon champion for the first time.
4) Nicholas Godsick
Nicholas Godsick, the son of three-time major winner Mary Joe Fernandes, will be in action in the Men’s Doubles event at the US Open. His dad, Tony Godsick, is also Roger Federer’s long-time Agent.
Overcoming her disappointing semi-final loss at the 1990 US Open, Mary Joe Fernandes has excellent Grand Slam appearances throughout her career. She reached the Australian Open final twice (1990, 1992) and the Roland Garros final once (1993)..
3) Taylor Fritz
Taylor Fritz was one of the high-profile victims on Monday at Flushing Meadows as the first day of action began.
The tenth seed – which was considered one of the dark horses for the title – lost to quarterfinalist Brandon Holt after opening up with a set win. After Holt took the next two, Fritz faded away as he ended with just six wins in New York. May reached her only Grand Slam quarterfinals at 1978 US Open where she lost to Wendy Turnbull.
2) Casper Ruud
Christian Ruud’s son, Casper, began his Flushing Meadows campaign with a straight-sets win over Kyle Edmund on Monday.
Casper is one of the great players to watch at the US Open this year. He reached the final, but was narrowly beaten by Rafael Nadal in an epic match. There are not many people who can challenge Nadal for that title and the other three players include current No. 1 Daniil Medvedev, runner-up Carlos Alcaraz and current World No. 1 Rafael Nadal himself.
As the fifth seed, Ruud will compete with Tim in the third round. He has never reached to the second week at a Major, but he is looking for a deep run at this year’s Major.
1) Elizabeth Mandlik
Ons Jabeur is the fifth seed in the US Open and has held a single win this year to get into the tournament. She will next face Elizabeth Mandlik, who’s only amassed her first tour-level win as of recently.
Where Mandlikova had continued to dominate Navratilova; she successfully defended her Major, winning by beating her in the final’s first set before Balazs Sabato took over.
