3 players who might miss the T20 World Cup spot if fail to perform
3 players who might miss: The eagerly anticipated Asia Cup 2022 will begin very shortly, and there has been a sufficient amount of anticipation building up around the competition.
This is mostly attributable to the fact that the showcase competition will act as the primary dress rehearsal for the Twenty20 World Cup, which is scheduled to take place in October and November of this year.
In this regard, the BCCI announced the 15-member team earlier this month, which marked the comeback of Virat Kohli after the series in England, which took place the previous month.
Unfortunately, talented bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel were unable to make the travel to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) because of ailments to their ribs and sides, respectively. The participation of both of these players has been guaranteed for the Twenty20 World Cup, assuming that they make a full recovery from their respective injuries. To make room for them, a couple of the players will need to be at the top of their game in terms of performance if they want to avoid having the door of selection slammed in their faces.
In addition, the performance of the players in the main squad will determine whether or not three standby players named Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, and Deepak Chahar will be selected for the World Cup team. Each of these players has an equal chance of making the team.
1. Avesh khan
Following an outstanding showing in the IPL 2021, Avesh was allowed to compete on the international circuit. He participated in 16 matches and finished as the player with the second most wickets taken. His total was 24. On the other hand, he has not been particularly impressive in his few outings for India. The 25-year-old has played in 13 Twenty20 Internationals and amassed an average of 31.81 while taking 11 wickets. His economy rate is a woeful 8.67 runs per over.
During the most recent series played against the West Indies, the right-arm bowler took three wickets while maintaining an economy of 10.14 runs per match. Even though he has a batting average of 53 in List-A cricket, he has been called up to the One-Day International team. It is possible that Bumrah or Harshal will replace Avesh if his performance does not meet up to the standards that have been set.
2. Ashwin
After an absence of eight months, Ashwin returned to the Indian T201 team for the series against the West Indies a month ago. After taking 12 wickets while maintaining an economy rate of 7.41 for the runner-up Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League 2022, he received a call-up for an experienced spinner in the shortest format.
As a response, the 35-year-old bowler took three wickets in as many appearances during the Caribbean Tour at a strike rate of 6.66. Even though Ashwin had an excellent economy, he did not take enough wickets, which could work against him in the long run. In addition, Axar has been impressive enough in both departments in the ODI and T201 formats, and he might be able to make a case for himself in place of Ashwin if he continues his strong play in these formats.
3. Deepak Hooda
Since making his debut in February of this year, the batter who bats in the middle of the order has had success on the international circuit. In nine Twenty20 matches, Hooda scored 274 runs with a strike rate of 161.17. These scores include a lightning-fast century score against Ireland. On the other hand, he has been unable to capitalise on his starts by putting together long innings, which has led to a decline in his performance.
His momentum has taken a hit due to his lack of opportunities in the most recent series. The 27-year-old scored 69 runs throughout the course of the three Twenty20 Internationals that were played against West Indies, averaging 34.50 runs per game. During the same trip, Hooda was responsible for 60 runs throughout the span of two innings.
On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer amassed 161 runs in three innings during the one-day international part of the Caribbean Tour. The fact that he scored 64 runs off of 40 balls in his most recent T201 appearance as an opener demonstrates his ability to contribute effectively at any batting position.
It will be exciting to see who emerges victorious from the competition to earn the number five spot on India’s roster for the Twenty20 World Cup in 2022.
