2023 Durand Cup matches schedule: On August 3, several locations in India will host the 132nd edition of the Durand Cup. To claim the honor of hosting the oldest football tournament in Asia, 24 teams will fight against one another in a number of games through September 3.
The Durand Football Tournament Society is hosting the event this year with assistance from the governments of Assam and West Bengal, as well as the AIFF, Eastern Command of the Indian Armed Forces, and West Bengal.
The competition will take place in three cities for the second time—Kolkata, Guwahati, and Kokrajhar—this season. Due to their victory over Mumbai City FC in the 2022 Final, Bengaluru FC is the reigning champion of this year.
A little background: What gives the Durand Cup its name?
The competition was established in pre-independent India in 1885 and was given the name Sir Henry Mortimer Durand. Between 1884 and 1894, he served as India’s foreign secretary. Initially, princely states and various regiments and departments of the Indian Army played football against one another.
Since India’s independence, the army has continued to be present thanks to the participation of numerous clubs from various regiments of the Indian Armed Forces. In 2016, Army Green became the newest Army team to triumph.
Because they have each won the illustrious Durand Cup 16 times, Mohun Bagan and East Bengal have dominated the event and are the most successful teams there.
