The FIFA World Cup has had controversies in every edition over its 92-year history, including Diego Maradona’s “Hand of God” and England’s goal that was disallowed in South Africa in 2010.
Over the course of the 62 matches that have been played thus far in the 22nd FIFA World Cup, there have also been a number of controversies involving Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Five controversies from the 2022 World Cup are as follows:
Out or in? In the 51st minute
Japan’s Ao Tanaka scores the game-winning goal against Spain to give the Blue Samurais the lead in the Group E match.
After a lengthy VAR check, the goal stood because the referees determined that the ball did not cross the touchline.
Kaoru Mitoma was able to get in front of the ball, which came from the right side of the field. However, before the Japan player stopped the ball, it appeared to have crossed the touchline and been out of play.
In the match against Spain, Japan’s Kaoru Mitoma appears to have the ball over the line before passing it to Ao Tanaka for the goal. Following that, a VAR check determined that the ball had stopped just short of the line.
The Asian team took the lead after the decision, eventually defeating the 2010 World Champion 2-1.
In the Battle of Lahoz, Messi and Argentina lost to referee Lahoz.
Lionel Messi, the captain of Argentina, argued with the referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz in one of the tournament’s most well-publicized controversies.
During the post-game interview with the organizer, Messi stated, “I don’t want to talk about referees because then they will sanction you. But we were scared before the game because we knew what was coming [with Mateu Lahoz].” He continued, “They cannot put a referee of that caliber on this game when he is not up to the level.”
During the quarterfinal match of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 between Argentina and the Netherlands at Lusail Stadium, referee Antonio Mateu issues Lionel Messi a yellow card.
The quarterfinal conflict, which Lahoz directed at the Lusail Arena, saw a sum of 19 appointments, breaking the record of the Portugal versus Netherlands round of 16 match in the 2006 World Cup, prominently known as the ‘Clash of Nuremberg.
Ronaldo did not score?
In the group-stage match against Uruguay, Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo claimed a goal in the 54th minute, but Bruno Fernandes, a teammate, scored the goal.
Ronaldo leapt the highest as Bruno crossed the ball from the left side of the field into the goal. Later, replays revealed that Ronaldo had just missed hitting the ball.
Please, one more chance!
Ghana and South Korea played a very close game at the Education City Stadium in Qatar in the final round of Group H matches. South Korea was denied the final corner kick.
Mohammed Salisu and Mohammed Kudus scored for the Black Stars, who led 2-0 at halftime; however, Cho Gue-Sung scored twice just before the hour mark to tie the game.
However, Ghana scored again thanks to Kudus, who guided the ball into the net after receiving it from Inaki Williams.
In search of an equalizer, South Korea continued to pile bodies into the final third, with captain Son Hueng-Min hitting a couple of excellent long balls.
Griezmann’s goal against Tunisia
Griezmann’s goal against Tunisia was disallowed Antoine Griezmann scored in the eighth minute of the second half of France’s game against Tunisia on Wednesday, but the goal was ruled to have been scored by someone else.
The French forward was in an offside position when the free kick was delivered into the Tunisia penalty area, so Griezmann’s goal was disallowed.
The Tunisia defender’s actions were deemed to have been hampered by his presence. It was believed that the defender had retreated to cover Griezmann, which ultimately assisted the Atletico Madrid player in converting the opportunity.
He was asked to double-check the action on the VAR screen before the goal was awarded. Matthew Conger, the referee, reversed his decision to disallow France’s equalizer after a review.Les Blues recorded the grievance against the choice, just to see FIFA reject their allure.
In a statement, FIFA stated that the French Football Association’s protest regarding the Tunisia v. France FIFA World Cup match that took place on November 30 had been rejected by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee.
