Secured an early path to the knockout stages from Group G by winning their first two matches (2-0 against Serbia and 1-0 against Switzerland).
After defeating Ghana 3-2 and Uruguay 3-2, Portugal, led by Cristiano Ronaldo. Also made the cut for the knockout stages from Group G without a hitch. Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, overcame an unexpected defeat to Saudi Arabia to win Group C and advance to the Round of 16 while Poland, who had a higher goal difference than Mexico. Fought off a tough challenge to grow as the second-place team.
